Emerging in the early 90s, Mensclub formed when guitarist-vocalist Ron (Aaron) and bassist Jon—who had already been playing together for nearly a decade—brought drummer Tom into the fold.
As the angsty grunge had its hands wrapped around the neck of the zeitgeist, the trio decided to go in a different direction.
They dubbed themselves “the hardest rocking band in the Bay Area,” and they lived up to it—delivering full-throttle, no-frills hard rock that channeled the raw energy of the Midwestern trifecta of the MC5, Grand Funk Railroad, and The Stooges - albeit with some West Coast flair.
Between 1994 and 1996, Mensclub released a string of aggressive seven-inch singles—building a reputation on DIY grit and relentless intensity. Their 1996 debut LP, Comin’ to Take You Away, landed on Bar None Records and solidified their status as an unapologetically aggressive Bay Area power trio. Folklore has it that there is a full-length unreleased second album.
Mensclub became an underground staple through frequent West Coast tours, their music brimming with tongue-in-cheek swagger, heavy riffs, and a punch-to-the-gut rock attitude.
Though they officially disbanded in the late '90s, their legend lives on and carried forward through various other projects.
